MICROBLADING
IPL PHOTOFACIALS AND SKIN REJUVENATION
WHAT IS IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light is a technology where light is converted into heat energy.
Treatments are like a very powerful camera flash lamp being held against your skin.
The selected light waves target chromophores (colour pigments) such as melanin in brown spots and freckles; and such as haemoglobin in broken or diffused blood vessels. The light waves can also target specific protein molecules in acne bacteria and in collagen. IPL treats all conditions without disruption to the skin’s surface.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IPL AND LASER?
IPL’s are NOT lasers. The machines produce a broad spectrum of wavelengths (like a light bulb) and cannot be focused to a concentrated beam. Because a range of different wavelengths are dispersed at a variety of depths only some of these will be effective for hair reduction.
A more shallow penetration in comparison to laser means that deeper, thicker hairs are not treated effectively. In addition, some of the light can be absorbed into the surrounding tissue as well, leading to heating of the pigment in the skin. This is why there is more of a risk of burns for a darker skin type. Laser machines create more heat directed at the hair follicle than IPL systems, hence achieving better results. Because the heat is absorbed by the follicle, and not the skin, there is a decreased risk of burning when using Laser machines. This also makes Laser a safer option for darker skinned individuals.
SKIN REJUVENATION: HOW DOES IT WORK?
Enter the Answer to Question here. Be thoughtful with your answer, write clearly, and consider adding examples. This can help your visitors get the help they need quickly and easily.
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TREATMENTS?
It is difficult to predict the number of sessions required, as it depends on the nature of the lesions to be treated and their size, plus the client’s skin type, condition and colour. Some conditions may require maintenance treatments from time to time. This will be discussed during your consultation. Different types of skin rejuvenation require different numbers of treatments.
The following is a guide only:
SKIN TONE & RE-TEXTURE:
Fine lines & wrinkles, enlarged pores, minor pitting & scarring, etc
4 to 6 treatments usually recommended, at 4 to 6 week intervals.
VASCULAR LESIONS:
Facial redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, etc
2 to 6 treatments usually recommended, at 2 to 6 week intervals.
PIGMENTATION MARKS:
Freckles, sun spots, flat birthmarks, etc,
2 to 8 treatments usually recommended, at 4 to 6 week intervals.
ROSACEA AND ACNE:
Results are profound, but these hormonal conditions may return.
2 to 6 treatments usually recommended, at 1 to 3 week intervals.
WHAT HAPPENS AT MY APPOINTMENT?
Consultation and Test Patch:
Your first appointment will be a comprehensive consultation to answer all your questions and to check that there are no contra-indications to IPL treatments, such as medications which cause photo-sensitivity, and to ascertain the degree of recent sun or UV exposure on the area to be treated.
The colour of your skin and the condition to be treated must be assessed, then a calculation is made to determine the appropriate setting. A patch test will be applied and we must wait to see the outcome. Some conditions only require a few minutes wait, while others will require a separate appointment of up to 48 hours after the test patch. It is very important to be honest about medications and your recent sun or UV exposure. Clients with photo-sensitivity problems may develop some adverse reactions such as blistering or mild burning sensations. Your first test patch flash will be set on a low setting in order to avoid this. The setting may be raised if appropriate.
All Treatments:
The treatment area is re-assessed, wiped with a mild antiseptic lotion to remove all traces of oils, etc., and ultrasound gel is then applied. Both the operator and the client will wear glasses to protect their eyes from the bright flashes of light, then treatment may commence. The flash light lamp at the head of the hand piece is held against the client’s skin and the intense light is pulsed at the trigger of a button. The lamp is moved to cover the entire area, with a minimum of 2 seconds between each flash. Once the treatment is completed the gel will be wiped off and a cooling gel will be applied, plus sun block where appropriate.
IS IT PAINFUL?
Some treatments have little or no sensation at all, but for other treatments, clients may feel a slight sting, similar to the flick of a rubber band against your skin. It is certainly not unbearable, and we can always reduce the intensity if you feel the need. Immediately after some treatments you may feel a mild heat for a few minutes, or a couple of hours, but after most treatments you will feel next to nothing at all.
HOW WILL I LOOK AFTER THE TREATMENT?
Immediate Response:
In most cases there is no visible reaction and you would be expected to be able to return to work and resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment. However, IPL causes heat in the target tissues; therefore it is quite acceptable for the area to be slightly reddened immediately after treatment, but this would normally dissipate within half an hour. It is possible for the skin to appear slightly red for a couple of hours and up to 24 hours. If a reaction is visible after 48 hours it is imperative to contact your IPL operator for further advice. For those people concerned about wearing make-up immediately after treatment; provided there is no adverse reaction, (which is very rare), we can apply a mineral foundation to your face after your sun block. After hair removal treatments is also common to see a slight swelling at the mouth of each hair follicle, similar to goose bumps. This appearance should disappear within the same frame time as with reddening.
Please note: In darker skinned people, these responses may be delayed for up to 24 hours.
IMPORTANT BEFORE CARE.
Sun exposure and tanning:
You can NOT be treated if you have had ultra violet (UV) exposure from the sun or sun beds within the past 4 to 6 weeks. Therefore prior to your treatments you must cover well with clothing and hats and sunblock to prevent extra activity of the melanin cells in your skin. Melanin cells are responsible for tanning. Your tan slowly ‘wears off’ as those cells reach the surface of your skin in the normal skin- shedding activity, known as skin renewal.
Spray tans stain the outer skin cells, and this colour will intensify the IPL heat at the surface of the skin, therefore we cannot treat with IPL for at least two weeks after a spray tan application.

IMPORTANT AFTER CARE:
A mild sunburn-like sensation is expected. This usually lasts 12-24 hours but can persist up to 72 hours. Mild swelling and/or redness may accompany this, which usually resolves in 2-3 days. Ice packs can be used as needed for comfort and to relieve swelling.
Prolonged redness or blistering may occur.
Pigmented lesions will continue to darken after treatment before fading. They may turn brown or even black.
Pigmented lesions may develop crusts that will begin flaking off in 2-3 days. Do NOT pick at the scabs or crusts. This will cause unwanted side effects and possibly permanent discolorations. Apply a gentle moisturizer to the treated area.
Vascular lesions may turn a darker red or purple before fading. Do not press on red areas.
Lesions are usually healed in 7-10 days. They will continue to fade or flake over the next 2-4 weeks.
Avoid exercising and other activities that will heat the skin for 48 hours.
Avoid chlorine for 1 week post treatment.
Avoid hot showers, hot tubs and saunas for 24 hours or until all redness that has subsided.
Avoid sun exposure to treated areas for 1 month. Apply a sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with a SPF 25 or higher daily to sun-exposed skin. Sun exposure can cause an adverse reaction to the treatments! Once all treatments and healing are complete, we recommend continued daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Avoid loofahs and scrubs on the treated areas for several days. Gently pat dry promptly after washing.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
The laser targets the darkness of the melanin pigment in the hair follicle. Since melanin is only produced in the growth phase of the hair, the laser must target the hair follicle during this cycle. At any given time, 10-20% of the hair in a particular area may be in a growth phase. Therefore, more than one treatment needs to be scheduled, preferably at 6-8 week intervals. With multiple treatments all hair follicles can be disabled.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL BE NEEDED?
Laser treatment impairs the growth of hair follicles when they are in the growth (or anagen) cycle at the time of treatment. Unfortunately, not all hair follicles are at this stage at the same time. Therefore, for effective hair removal, most people require approximately six to eight treatments to achieve the desired results. The number of sessions also depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Risks are minimal. There is no recovery or downtime. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately. After the treatment you may experience a slight reddening of the skin similar to a sunburn that will resolve within a few hours to days. In certain instances (especially in patients with darker complexions) temporary pigment changes may occur, but will disappear within a month.
IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?
This is a common initial concern for many of our patients. Our lasers use a special cooling system that lowers the temperature of the skin at the treatment site before, during, and after laser exposure. Therefore, the treatment is generally not painful and is well tolerated. Some patients describe the treatment as a sensation like the snap of a rubber band and "much less painful than the waxing I used to subject myself to." Topical anesthetic cream is an option for more sensitive areas.
ARE THE RESULTS PERMANENT?
Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Studies have shown that many patients can achieve hair reduction of up to 85-90% and remaining hair returns lighter and softer. Results vary depending on patient.
DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE GROWN OUT BEFORE THE TREATMENT?
No. Actually we recommend that you shave the area to be treated. The only reason we sometimes recommend our clients to leave the hair long is so that we can identify the texture of the hair. This can be done easily by looking at the other body parts where there is hair. Waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or any other method that removes the hair must be discontinued at least a week prior to treatment.
WILL I HAVE TO USE ANY TOPICAL ANAESTHETICS BEFORE MY TREATMENT?
Absolutely not. In most cases it is not recommended to use any topical numbing preparations (prescription or non-prescription) prior to laser hair removal. The DCD (Dynamic Cooling Device) that lasers are equipped with eliminates the need for any topical numbing preparations. Before every laser pulse, cryogen (cooling agent) is automatically sprayed onto the skin within the laser field that protects and partially numbs that area. This makes the treatment safer and more comfortable.
IS IT SAFE?
Laser treatments are very safe. Our lasers are FDA approved and use the best technology for delivering the safest treatment. All of our technicians are certified and experienced with providing treatments to fit your needs.
IS IT SAFE FOR DARKER SKIN TYPES?
Yes. Every day we treat dark skin types with our Diode laser, which is gentler on darker tones. Laser technology has advanced in recent years, and in the past it was difficult or impossible for a client with darker skin to be treated. The new Diode laser ensures that darker skin types, can receive effective and safe treatments.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Although our prices are measured per area, it is best for us to evaluate the area in person. We always offer free consultations, and cost will vary according to treatment plan, areas to be treated, and amount of hair. Clients may pay per treatment, but we also offer package discounts and multiple area discounts. We also often run specials on the website.
CAN ANY AREA BE TREATED?
Most areas can be treated. The laser is most effective on dark, course hair, as well as it's an excellent treatment for ingrown hairs. Our technicians will assess your areas of concern and help you get your results.
WILL I EXPERIENCE HAIR GROWTH BETWEEN MY TREATMENTS?
Our goal is that you never have to shave again once you start your treatments. Generally, treatments are scheduled around growth cycles, so if you keep to your treatment schedules, you should never have to shave. Since treatment time could vary, you may see some growth between appointments. We can then try to adjust your treatments to give you the best result. It is important to note, however, that if you need to remove hair between treatments, shaving is the preferred method. Do not wax or tweeze the hair.
